For Bens
Boys seem to really like the bright primary colours and graphics we use and we've had lots of feedback from parents whose boys were reluctant to read or write but who have been really motivated by our stickers. It has given them the confidence to have a go at writing and motivated them to want to try to read.
However, please remember that your son is an individual and some children (and some boys in particular) are simply later to learn to read or write than others.
Our advice is never to 'push' your child. If he's keen and enthusiastic to read and write then that's great - support, praise and encourage him. But if he doesn't want to, consider whether you are being realistic in your expectations. If he's three and he can't read or write his name yet and his friend can it doesn't mean he's behind and that he won't do so perfectly well when he's ready.
Read lots of books with him and encourage him to listen to the stories and talk about them. Give him the chance to run around and have fun, be creative, enjoy music. Write for him and let him see it can be fun and useful. Play games with words and help him learn to listen, communicate and discuss. Encourage him to make pictures - using our stickers if you wish - and build models. Let him be a child.
Take a look at our ideas leaflets for some things to try. Most importantly focus on what he can do and what he likes doing and praise his achievements to ensure that you are helping to build his confidence and self-esteem.
If you are concerned about your child's development then we would encourage you to speak to your nursery or school for advice and guidance. Otherwise, let him lead the way and when he's ready be there to support and encourage him.
